Ramsay Health Care announces $180m expansion of Warringal Private Hospital

Ramsay Health Care has announced a massive expansion of Warringal Private Hospital, investing $180 million to transform it into a state-of-the-art, multi-tower, 290 bed facility, almost twice the size of the existing hospital.

The expansion will allow Warringal Private Hospital to provide world-class quality healthcare to more people in the community with 131 more beds than are currently available. Once the development is completed, the hospital will feature 14 operating theatres, a new, larger Intensive Care Unit, a new Emergency Department and new 29 bed Day Surgery. It will also host a range of new facilities for essential support services including a new Diagnostic Imaging department.

Warringal Private Hospital CEO, Kieron Martin, said the expansion was needed to meet the demands of local patients and doctors. 

“This expansion will provide new facilities to enable of our community to receive the care they need locally - closer to home, family and friends,” Mr Martin said. 

“The redevelopment is the most significant expansion in our hospital’s 46-year history and shows Ramsay Health Care’s commitment to meeting the growing healthcare needs of the communities north of Melbourne. 

“With population growth in our region predicted to increase significantly in coming years, this work will ensure Warringal Private Hospital is well placed to meet the private healthcare needs of the northern suburbs well into the future.”

The three-stage project is Ramsay Health Care’s largest ever brownfield development and will begin this month. 

“The first stage is due to be completed in mid-2024 and includes the expansion of the existing main building adding three new floors, two additional operating theatres, three new wards and a new recovery area,” Mr Martin said.  

“Stage two will see the demolition of the existing building housing the Conder and Streeton wards, to be replaced by a brand new five level underground car park and above it, a seven-storey tower. The tower will house the new Day Surgery, new 14 bed Intensive Care Unit, updated sleep study services, a new diagnostic imaging department, an additional operating theatre and medical consulting suites.”    

To service the new, larger hospital, an additional 261 underground car parking spaces will be constructed, bringing the total spaces to 584.

The third and final stage of the development will unveil a new Emergency department, main entrance and new Ramsay Retail Pharmacy, and is due to be completed in early 2026.
