Warringal Private Hospital home to new robotic technology for spine surgery

Warringal Private Hospital now boasts a new, cutting-edge robotic device which aims to provide spine surgeons and their patients with options for advanced surgeries with the safest possible results.

The new, million-dollar Mazor X Stealth Edition is a robotic guidance platform which integrates and streamlines three complex processes. The robot is designed to increase accuracy of procedures and reduce the risk of errors.

Dr Keat Ooi was the spine surgeon at the helm of Warringal Hospital’s first surgery using the Mazor X. The high-tech surgery aimed to relieve back pain for a 65-year-old man who suffers from a degenerative spine condition.

Dr Ooi said he feels privileged to be part of Warringal Private’s journey in technological advancement.

“Surgery is continually evolving and offering better outcomes,” Dr Ooi said.

“The Mazor X is designed to allow for improved accuracy in the planning, guidance and visualisation of spine surgery. It can build a 3D simulation of a patient’s spine and allow us to see every minute detail of the spine during surgery.

“I believe in adopting new technology to improve safety for our patients and look forward to seeing how else the Robot can help in the future.” Working with Dr Ooi was a team of nursing and sterilising staff with special expertise and training who quickly prepared to assist on this complex surgery.

The investment in the Mazor X Stealth Edition by Warringal Private Hospital means patients now have convenient access to state-of-the-art spine surgery. More than 3.7 million Australians live with chronic back pain and it is expected patients will travel from around the country to access this technology. The introduction of Mazor X technology at Warringal Private follows the Australian-first introduction of the robot at Ramsay Health Care’s Pindara Private Hospital on the Gold Coast and Ramsay Health Care’s North Shore Private Hospital in Sydney.
