Mr Francis Ma is a highly trained Australian Orthopaedic Surgeon with International Subspecialty training.
Having graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1999, Francis completed his internship and surgical training at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. His Specialist Orthopaedic training was in the Victorian training program. He was awarded the Australian Orthopaedic Association Registrar Prize in 2008 as the highest ranked registrar in Victoria and Tasmania. Completing his specialist training in 2009, he was then appointed as Orthopaedic Consultant at St Vincent's Public and Maroondah Hospitals in 2010. He then undertook his Fellowships in the UK where he gained invaluable experience with complex hip and knee replacements, including difficult primary and revision (redo) replacements at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. A second Fellowship at the University Hospital of Coventry and Warwickshire in the UK, provided him with first class experience hip arthroscopy, used in the management of femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), hip and groin pain and sports medicine in the active adult population including elite British athletes.
Returning to Australia in the second half of 2011, Francis spent a further four months visiting local arthroplasty surgeons (Mr Tony Dunin and Mr Neil Bergmann) and hip arthroscopy surgeons (Mr John O’Donell and Mr David Young) to further refine his techniques and experiences prior to starting private practice at the end of 2011.
He has been performing anterior minimally invasive hip replacement surgery since 2011, with very good results and lower than average complication rates. He is now an experienced surgeon in the anterior minimally invasive approach for total hip replacement. Francis now performs most primary hip replacements via the anterior approach. More complex cases or those not suitable to have an anterior approach are performed via a mini-posterior/posterior approach.
Francis' special interests and expertise include:
- Hip arthroscopy and the management of hip pain in the young adult, especially femoroacetabular impingement (FAI)
- Management of arthritis of the hip and knee
- Anterior minimally invasive and mini posterior hip replacement
- Partial and total knee replacement (routine use of computer navigation)
- Complex primary and revision (redo) replacement procedures of the hip and knee
- Local infiltrative anaesthetic techniques to facilitate early recovery
- Knee arthroscopy , meniscal repair and ligament reconstruction
- General orthopaedic trauma in adults and children
Since the start of 2015, Francis has been a co-supervisor of a hip and knee arthroplasty, arthroscopy and reconstruction fellowship, teaching surgeons from Australia, New Zealand and overseas the techniques he has learned and continues to refine.
