Matias is an experienced and passionate cardiologist with a clinical focus in interventional cardiology. He is the Director of Structural Heart Interventions at Austin Health and the Head of the TAVI program at Warringal Private Hospital.

 

Matias graduated from the University of Queensland Medical School in 2007 with a Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). After completing his Internship and Physician Training, he entered the Cardiology Advanced Training program at the Royal Melbourne Hospital before becaming a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) in 2014. Matias then underwent two years of subspecialty training in Interventional Cardiology at Austin Health prior to travelling to New York City to complete a Fellowship in Structural Heart Disease Intervention at the prestigious Mount Sinai Hospital. 

 

Matias is passionate about medical research and academia. He has published extensively and his manuscripts have been featured in some of the world’s top cardiology journals such as the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, International Journal of Cardiology, Circulation, American Journal of Cardiology and British Medical Journal. Matias has presented his scientific research at both national and international conferences. He was awarded scholarships from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) and National Heart Foundation to undertake his PhD on “Optimising Clinical Outcomes in Patients with Acute Coronary Syndromes” through the University of Melbourne. As part of his research, he developed a smartphone based secondary prevention program to improve the cardiac health of all Australians. This innovative model of care has won multiple awards as well as competitive grants from Victorian Government and the National Heart Foundation.
