Professor Niall Tebbutt is a consultant Medical Oncologist recognized nationally and internationally as an expert in cancers of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract.
Professor Niall Tebbutt is the director of the Department of Medical Oncology, Olivia Newton John Cancer and Wellness and Research Centre and sees private patients at Darebin Street Specialist Centre in Heidelberg. He has a major interest in both clinical and laboratory-based research and leads the clinical research program in GI cancers at Austin Health. He has been the Principle Investigator for over 150 clinical trials.
He trained at Oxford University in the UK and since arriving in Australia in 1993, he has had extensive experience in the management of patients with cancer, having worked in a number of hospitals in Melbourne. He also gained clinical research experience in gastrointestinal caner at the Royal Marsden Hospital, UK.
In 2002, Prof Niall Tebbutt was awarded PhD by Melbourne University for laboratory based genetic research in gastrointestinal cancer and in 2003, he received a commendation for the Premiers Award for Medical Research for his PhD thesis. He has also co-authored over 150 peer-reviewed publications and was awarded title Associate Professor from the University of Melbourne in 2009.
In 2009, he was elected to the Scientific Advisory Committee and the Board of Directors of the Australasian GI Trials Group (AGITG) and chairs the lower GI working party. He is currently Deputy Chair and Tresurer of the group.
Professor Niall Tebbutt has led two high altitude mountain climbs to raise awareness of GI cancers and to fundraise for research in GI cancers. These involve the ascent of Mt Kilimanjaro (2015) and Mt Aconcagua (2018), the highest mountain in the world outside the Himalayas. In 2020, he will lead a further climb of Mt Himlung in Western Nepal (7126m).
