Gerald specialises in surgery for all disorders of the spine from the cervical to lumbosacral regions, particularly in primary and secondary tumours affecting the spine and the management of degenerative conditions and complex deformities. Gerald is committed to providing the highest standard of dedicated, comprehensive and evidence-based care for his patients with spinal pathologies.

Mr. Quan is an Australian and Fellowship-trained consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with an interest in spinal surgery.

 Mr. Quan completed his medical training at the University of Melbourne in 1998, before completing his specialist orthopaedic training in Victoria in 2007 and gaining Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in December 2007. Subsequently he undertook dedicated Advanced post-Fellowship training in Spinal Surgery in major spine centres throughout the world. This included a 12-month Fellowship at the Spinal Deformity Centre, Freeman Hospital, United Kingdom and a further 12 months at the Spinal Pathologies Unit, Department of Orthopaedics, University Hospital of Bordeaux, France, the largest and one of the most prestigious spine units in Europe. He was the first Australian to be awarded the Asia Pacific Spine Travelling Fellowship which enabled him as a visiting surgeon to operate and lecture in several of the most important spinal centres in the Asia Pacific, including Hong Kong, India, Thailand and Korea.

Mr. Quan has a strong academic research and teaching background through the University Of Melbourne Department Of Surgery at both Austin Health and St. Vincent’s Health and is committed to the advancement of orthopaedic and spinal research. He obtained a PhD at the University of Melbourne in 2005 in the field of bone and tumour biology. He was awarded a prestigious National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia Post-Doctoral Fellowship in 2008. He is Head of Spinal Research in the University of Melbourne Department of Surgery and has presented widely and published several papers.

Gerald Quan has an appointment at Austin Health to lead the Spinal Surgery service and is senior consultant surgeon to the Victorian Spinal Cord Injury Service. His clinical focus is in surgery for all disorders of the spine from the cervical to lumbosacral regions, particularly in primary and secondary tumours affecting the spine and the management of degenerative conditions and complex deformities.
